So, I think the default knife mechanics are kind of boring. I decide to take a look at the way PS1 did the knife, and also BF3(plsdonthitme), as I think those two games made the knife a bit more fun to use (except for BF3s lock on animations).
So here are some ideas to improve knife mechanics.
The only problem I guess is that SOE didn't visually design the knifes to have a "turn on" mechanic (open in new tab) It feels to me like they had no intention to make them the energy-fused weapons like they were in PS1 The chain on the chain-blade doesn't go around it The button to activate the mag-cutter is missing And the forceblade is missing it's energy bar But besides that... what does everyone think? I fucking hate quick knife. No idea how BF3 did it (unless they also did quick knife, in which case fuck them) but a return to the Planetside style of knife would be preferable in my personal opinion.
It used to be if you saw one brave, yet stupid, enemy running at you with his knife out the towel had been thrown down and the only possible reaction was to pull out your own knife to settle things. sigh. #rosetinted (because hashtags work here right?) |

the way BF3 did it is covered by the first two points. If you swiped with your knife with your weapon drawn, there was a slow recovery time so you couldnt do it again for a second or two Equipping it though allowed you to knife faster |

Hm, that's an elegant middle ground I think. The animation/OHK from behind wouldn't work too well in PS2 but the suggestions you've got would be an improvement over the current setup. The recovery time for sure. Plus, with the hit detection or whatever's going on with the knife atm if you could leave that in for quick knife but take it out for an equipped knife it would give added incentive to shank a smurf.
Plus I miss my chainblade. WRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR <get TK'd> |

yeah, knifing needs an overhaul. i hate the quick knifing mechanic, i like the good ol' days where you can switch to your knife/melee weapon instead of the cheap, quick tap of "f" to knife some poor bastard who happened to run into me. it would add back the skill, and it would be awesome if you could customise it/get different types .
but i doubt that they would remove the quick knife mechanic in favour of switching to it manually, just like how they wouldn't remove the crown, because it has been there the entire time. but in terms of damage, it needs to be like BF3, in which it is 2 hits to kill someone from the front (or in PS2's case, 1 hit takes away shields, second kills, just like normal), and one hit in the back. it is balanced, and makes more sense. but i guess they could do it like BF3, where you can quick knife, but you can get it out manually anyway. actually, that could be something SOE could quite possibly do. I've never been a fan of the quick knifing in PS2.
I would much prefer for the knives to be equipable and actually have different characteristics to them. Also the Chain-Blade doesn't lend itself towards quick knifing, I really want it to be an actual Chain-Blade: Rev it up and cut through your foe. You know what? Fuck it, I want a chainsword!

Equippable knives, equippable grenades... oh how i miss the old FPS days. :L
Back then knifing actually ment...holding a knife instead of a gun. Which ment a situational trade-off of some sorts. And it ment LESS KEYS to be used, which is something i'm allways in favor of. Keep it simple. "Modern" Knifing/Grenading just means casually mashing extra buttons without foresight, which kinda degrades these weapons into a "spam" function. The third functionality (turning them on) is to basically give them that Planetside flavour |

They hinted at melee weapons being a possibility. So i'm thinking at some point they are going to sell us better knives/swords that go in the secondary weapon slot that can one hit kill people lol.
