Few hours of play, already an amazing experience

If you have been in this forum last week, you know I'm new-ish. I subbed last week out of curiosity, but of course I could not check what it is all about without people to fight with

But today... what an amazing thing it is, and hopefully will keep being

The best story? I was playing my VS, defending Dagon biolab, with the TR attacking from straight west and from the gun tower north, and NC doing air raids from the south. The siege had been a prolonged one, and eventually the NC had cut us off completely, leaving us to the mercy of the Terrans, who just started attacking even more fiercely... after hours of fighting, the base alarm goes off... "low resources", it says. A bit of questioning and research after, I learn what that entails. But everyone is busy, fighting goes on outside and inside, and noone seems to care about that little number... 20%... 10%...

So I decide to do it myself. I get an ANT, look at the map. Yep, the warpgate is *pretty far away*, and both of them go straight through enemy territory. I decide to go for the one south west.

Getting there, apart from the tension, goes rather well, without any encounter. So I park right at the edge of the bubble, and start charging. It's this moment when I start hearing voice calls. I turn around, watching an enemy AMS phase in, its pilot dismounts and menaciously advances towards me

I jump back on. Capacitors are barely at half. I undeploy and start legging it, unsure if the TRucker will attempt to stop me somehow. As I go I check the map.. "I'll never be there in time", as the base sits at 10%, stylized explosions surrounding it completely...

Damage indicators makes me jump as I close the map hastily. Someone had jumped on the turret of the tower I was passing closeby. If even possible, I press the accelerator even harder, praying for the little truck to go up that hill *just a bit faster*...

Out of range, shields are down to a sliver. I check the map again. I know time is against me, so I take a hard choice - to cut through the mountains, with the risk of getting stuck in a ditch, in a rock, or of finding a mountain I would be unable to climb. Knowing nothing of the map, this is possibly the most blind choice I ever made

I see my waypoint getting close. Only a small hill separates me from visual range of the base. I'm not going for careful driving achievements, so I just jump it...

ending right at the back of a small TR armor spearhead, attacking the turrets of the biolab from afar. They're right between me and my objective. I don't think. I just go straight for it

At the beginning, they must have thought I was one of them. Then, I suspect surprise must have been their next thought. "Wait a minute... that little truck is purple, did he just come from behind us?" Fact is, several precious seconds pass before tank shells start raining on my ANT. Enough to make it past the walls, out of sight....

and straight in front of a NC Reaver. As I consider my past lives and respawns, and how this base is now doomed, the Reaver proceeds to attack the definitively more threatening Basilisk parked in the courtyard. I run for the silo, impacting with the crates (as my precision driving still hasn't adapted to these vehicles), and as I reverse I see the Reaver fleeing, engaged by two friendly Mosquitoes.

Going as fast as I can, I crash into the silo. No time for using the brake. My hand hammers the deployement button, as I watch an unsuspecting enemy MAX run on the small bridge right above me...

A sigh of relief finally comes. 20%. 30% "resources are now normal", 40%... and the flashing red light finally stops

But what was more awesome than that? About 3 Vanu comrade in arms, driving past the silo, who stop, and thank me, saying me that I just saved the entire base, one of them repairing my little truck

And so, once the capacitor was full, I did what I know I had to do. I watched as my allies mounted an assault to the tower in the north, as the AMS started trundling towards the nearest cover. I went alongside them, and with the little truck that could, led the charge to the tower

We took it

And the siege continued

Welp, that came longer than expected. Oh well, the things you do while waiting for the server to come back :P

and the devs thought things like ANT duty would just be too boring for ps2 and todays players would not like it...

i also think this was a very cool and innovative system! something no other fps had. a lot of things to do that don´t involve shooting others in the face!

Some of the most butt-clenching moments in PS1 could be when you're getting a full ANT air-dropped into a base that's been sitting at 10% for minutes, all while your CY is under siege from a different empire. You can only hope to get at least 20% NTU into the silo before you try it again.

Can't wait to get back into it.

The tower you passed auto-fires at vehicles of larger mass.

you don´t know what planetside is about until you have done the last minute hardcore antrun under enemy fire! it´s just so unique! and the way the OP did it wasn´t even the teamwork supported way!

you could recruit an escort to help you survive your run, or even get a galaxy or loadstar pilot to help and lift you up with your small ant. doing an organised supportrun with escorts and airsupport is even more fun than doing it on your own.

ok, anting behind the lines without enemies involved can be quite boring and has to be done sometimes, but even this serves the purpose of a free xp fountain for the whole squad, and EVERYBODY loves free xp

Use to be even more intense when you actually had to get your ass out of the vehicle and run around to the back to deploy it. LOL

The amount of people on last night, in the hour I played, was not that many. I'm assuming you aren't seeing that much population either. Hopefully we will eventually see more people get on, especially this weekend coming up. Then you'll see how much fun the game really can be!
