Development shifting focus to Optimization

Smed has also posted a bit on Reddit:

I think this is basically him saying "we're focusing hard on PS4 optimizations, so no new content for a while. But you'll get the benefit of these too... so I'll just call it PC optimizations to make it sound like we're working for you guys"

Does this mean Hossin, or Feature X, Y or Z are on hold?
  • Answer - I've asked that we cease work on everything else until we get the performance situation significantly improved? Wha
t does that mean? It means faster, using less memory and better behaving. Beyond that we need to wait and see.
Does this mean AMD's are getting attention?
  • Answer - yes
Does this mean that Multicore support is coming?
  • Answer - yes.
Why didn't we do this before?
  • Answer - we have tried a lot of stuff while the plane is in the air and flying. We cant keep adding stuff without taking the time to clean this up. That's what we've been doing and it's been a mistake.
Will this impact Everquest Next -
  • Answer No
How much faster will I see the game run -
  • Answer - not sure yet. Let us do our work on this and get back to you.

Good news. I hope people don't get bitchy about this, IE no new content for a while. Personally, if we get hossin or nexus we should have something new to do for a bit anyway. Ultimately this will make a better game.

I guess an early build of PS2 for the PS4 wasn't up to snuff.

I am willing to wait. If this means Hossin will take even longer, while I'm not too happy about it, I'm willing to suck it up for a bit.

Performance is crippling this game.

This has been needed for a while.

Someone mentioned that on Reddit, I just updated the OP a bit with Smeds comments.

Meh, makes no difference to me. Game has always performed well for me. But I can see it's needed due to the amount of whinging on the Official forums that a lot of users out there simply can't seem to get it to run on their antiquated hardware. <<There's a clue in there why it performs badly for some.

OK I see it. Overall this is a great thing for retaining new players. Beyond a learning curve and a somewhat lacking new player experience, there is no doubt that performance is the main barrier to entry. I suppose with the mounting hype from the PS4 launch and the subsequent PS2 release on it then this is a good business call. New content etc will wait but this does seem a more necessary area of concern.

Can't complain about this choice, performance is probably the main issue holding back player retention.

Some, yes. But far from all of them. And complaining about bad performance isn't whining if said complaint has merit. Which it does... For a LOT of people.

I dunno, alot of people i know got bored cos of no new content... It is a shame. To me new content is continents, not guns or custom decals and we havn't had any since launch. May i be the first to whinge lol.
