Seriously, new news... To quote the tweet "...hacking is possible now" "hacking is a design call, i'm saying the changes we are making is making that possible if @mhigby wants it. its all for the good" So for those of you just tuning in, Vehicle hacking, the ability to make vehicles hackable by infiltrators so that they can be stolen, is now POSSIBLE in planetside 2. A few months back this became a major point of the infiltrator update, and at the time we were told it wasn't possible. Because of the work done for OMFG... it now is, according to T-ray. Seriously, if you do bloody anything right now, set aside all forumside differences, and it is time to flood Higby with All the requests for this feature. Hmm. Wouldn't that also mean that 3 man crewed MBTs are possible now.

If I remember correcly the reason why we couldn't have hackable vehicles was because of the vehicle weapons (Or rather issues with certification options), one of the reasons why they wouldn't be able to change the current MBTs into having a crew requirement.
I'll have to go back to the old threads and read up on it more.

How does that even relate to the 3 personnel you mentioned? I thought it was simply a design choice of whether or not they wanted to allow you to wield enemy weaponry. |

From what I remember the reason why players couldn't hack vehicles was because of the enemy vehicle weapons causing some issues. I also seem to remember that being a possible issue with switching around who guns what on current MBTs. It was some time ago and I don't really remember the possible technical issues so I might just be writing utter nonsense. If that's the case just ignore this as being the ravings of the uncle who just stopped taking his medication. I would however like to know what exactly changed to now allow for them to have hackable vehicles.

I like the challenge it brings but I can't help but fear for Deployed Sundys and Anchored Prowlers...
I hope we get to keep the vehicle we steal and that the victim gets refunded on resources or on the cool-down timer. It would be cool to also have a Defensive Slot Counter-Hacking cert that prevents hacking at the cost of more important defensive options, gives vehicle users a chance against a undetected Infiltrator. |

They had a technical limitation behind hacking and crewed MBTs because of whatrather on the server/client not allowing a player to use something they don't have pre-attributed to their character. Ergo this would mean you couldn't fire another faction's weapon or drive their vehicle because that data is not attributed to your character. This change shouldn't have any affect on crewed MBTs though, unless they 'unlocked' the driver+gunner code chunk [read: possibly optimized it] so it is now technically possible to have a player drive an MBT without manning the main gun [because prior to now they might have had it so that the 'driver' code was the same function as the 'gunner' code for the main gun of MBT]. |
