In my opinion roleplaying is essential to making any kind of MMOgame work. Especially something like this. I've been seeing a lot of posts saying things like roleplaying is silly or roleplaying has no place in an FPS. I don't agree at all. In a normal FPS like a counter-strike, or Wolfenstein i would agree with that but on the kind of scale Planetside is going to be on it just won't work without at least a LITTLE roleplaying. If you're not in character why should you care which faction takes a certain base? Why should you follow orders from commanders leading an attack? Why play this game at all?

um, when u do any kind of communication in battle, u are roleplaying basically.
whenever u strategize u are also roleplaying. but it doesnt need to be taken beyond that, no dramatizations or anything. if i pay to play, i want to be able to talk to anybody about anything, even if its not in context, which it frequently isnt. |

You've hit upon exactly the point i'm trying to make. In game interactions where it concerns battles and things of that nature MUST be roleplayed. In this kind of game that's all that's necessary to be roleplaying. Most people are more afraid of the word than they are of the act itself. Roleplaying doesn't mean talking in thees and thous. To me roleplaying is simply not talking about things not game related in an open chat. That's all there is to it...doesn't seem that hard.

The main thing is to make sure that it doesn't take away from combat. It would suck if higher levels had to much of an advantage. As long as the devs don't put to much rpg elements in, a little roleplaying is fine.

isnt that why they would use semi realistic style weapons, they expect us to use tank tactics from operation desert storm (which incidently would look cool if all tanks lined up goin through desert ),
they expect snipers to use tactics out of "enemy at the gates" etc, thats role playing.... even if its only to a small degreee its still a nescesity. |

Definition of an RPG:
A game in which players assume the roles of characters and act out fantastical adventures, the outcomes of which are partially determined by chance, as by the roll of dice. this will never be that, but if people want to take a "role" and act it out. more power to them, me personally I will just play as myself |

Being in character is the only defining factor of roleplaying. All the character stats, levels and advancement schemes are simply gaming conventions that are often used in roleplaying games, but they are just as common in other game types.

Using your mind and communicating with your team to accomplish the objective of a game is not roleplaying.
