Constant Crash to Desktop

Just got the Beta yesterday, thanks indirectly to PSU and directly to the people at GameOver online. Unfortunately I can't access the Beta forums with the account I was given, so I'm asking this here.

The game connects fine, I can see servers and create characters.

When it's time to load into the world to play (sanctuary or instant action) it shows it's loading textures, etc. then it craps out to the desktop. Sometimes it breaks earlier, sometimes the completion bar almost fills.

Any idea what's wrong, have others complained of the same symptoms? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

My machine:

Windows 98SE
AMD Athlon XP 1900
256MB RAM
DirectX 9.0a
GeForce4 Ti 4200, 128 MB with AGP8X (Gainward)
Det driver 40.72
mobo: Iwill KK266
sound: onboard C-Media 8738

Kontuz, try and buy some more RAM.

Pyro, buy a new video card. Get at least an ATI 9500pro/nVidia TI4200.

try dropping AGP down to 4X m8 - 8X AGP is slightly buggy at the moment

also you may be running out of ram/page file

Kontuz-

I have similar system. (AMD 2.1g)

I upgraded my RAM to 768. Runs like a charm... (note that Sunday's patch was also very helpful in this regard).

I ahven't narrowed down what worked for me but this is what I've done... and now I'm golden.

-Check your router (put it out on public IP)
-Set resolution to 1024x900 or something
-change sound to 2D MILES (on Options)
-Draw distance 85%
-Set BIOS to 64mb
-MemTurbo Pro

Kpnutz - your #1 issue is Win98. If you can get WinXP, get it. Consider it above almost any hardware upgrade. I'm sure someone here will post I play PS fine on Win98 and all, but its past its day, hell its decade.

Pyro, the 8500/64 should be fine. This should be a fully clocked 8500 and not the slower LE version. Maybe get something like a Riva Tuner or something and check your cpu/mem speeds, possibly clock them up some. I used the non-AIW version for PS for a while and it worked just fine. Little slow on loading. Also tweak down the video as low as playable for you.

Thanks for the replies!

I will look into the RAM, and probably the OS upgrade. I understand if you buy a drive with the OS already installed it's alot cheaper.

But the good news is, I run PS now! The main change was removing the texture preload, which you can do in the advanced graphics option page.

Something I ran into....

I also am running PS under win98, and had a similar issue with loading all the files and then crapping out to desktop. I looked in the planetside_crash file in the root game directory and saw an EAX related failure. So, by getting a decent soundcard into the machine it fixed my problem. So, this is another solution you might consider if your soundcard is obsolete. Hope you get up and runnin.
