No handy dandy picture this time, sorry. You'll just have to picture this in your head.
This is a continent made up of 5-6 islands. These aren't regular islands though. They are sheer cliffs extending up to max ceiling height. The only way to access these islands is by assaulting a beachhead like area. Planes can fly thru the beachhead area, but no where else on the island. Each island is large enough for 2-3 bases. About the size of the island in the middle of essamir. The beachhead area is basically a cave like area cut out of the cliffs. There is a roof so planes will have to fly low to get thru it. There are two beachheads per island. The beachheads are fairly wide areas, just not that tall. There are bunkers up from the landing area. These bunkers have 12mm chainguns in them. Basically the idea is just to give you a different approach to a base and after that you would take the base like normal. It's not a shattering change, but it would be something different to see. Lattice links extend around to the different islands and you would kinda have to do an assault landing as you go. Maybe the central island can be bigger and you have to atleast take an outer island base and an inner island base before you can access the central base on the central island. Not really sure there, but it's pretty flexible. Depending on if/when naval units are added you can change it around some. Set a base entrance on the outside of the cliff to permit naval units to cover it while galaxies drop on it and then move from the cliff side towards the middle. Naval units would definatly make this continent more fun. Have a vehicle carrier that can drive up to the beach and unload a tank or so. Cruisers that fire 75mm cannons. Aircraft carrier to provide a place for rearming and repairing of planes. Battleship armed with 100mm-150mm cannons but has a deep draft so it can't get in close.... used to fight other ships. Maybe a troop ship that has room for 4-5 deliverers. Load up the guys and move in close then drive out and onto the beach ready for action. Stuff like that. |

How coudl we get transport planes there if planes can only fly around the beachhead areas?
i think this is a good idea (except for ^^^), but to make it a little be easier to program, maybe there should jsut be incredibly, and i mean INCREDIBLY, long bridges connecting the islands. It would provide very good choke points for defense, making attacks more challenging. Also, i don't think that you would really need to limit planes' area of flight, i doubt it woudl be a problem. |

I thought of long bridges. Then I thought of infiltrators with ace's placing mines half way across and you die and then respawn on the wrong side of the bridge. When you try to cross it happens again, and again and again. Long bridges are bad IMO.
You can use the planes, you just have to sacrifice them doing the beachhead or bring them in after the beachhead. There is enough clearance for a galaxy to fly thru, it just can't fly way up high. The point is to not skip the beachhead by flying over and just dropping everyone off behind the front there. |

with an aquatic expansion lets say...
Continent with these said bases have no dropship centers, and are 2 jumps away (i.e warpgate on searhus). Take out the mountains going up to clip to limit galaxies then because only constant streams of galaxies would come from Sina on searhus, thus only one side and really not that common/constant. Say they put in an aircraft carrior (basically ams with 8 landing pads and one air vehicle term), just make sure it cant spawn galaxies/lodestars |

What about actual ship bases? I mean ya have a few that jsut circle a certain agrea. Like a dropship center would be a ACC and a techno plant would be a destroyer. And the only way to get there would be water vehicles and planes. But then the risk would be if ya sky drop, its a very big chance ya will go smack dab right into the water.

Vanu would have an extreme advantage in this situation. Both mag riders and threshers can cover a decent amount of water before....well they dont sink actually, they just make you get out.
Long bridges would just have a ton of mines, but all you really need to get rid of mines is to run an ams down the bridge. |

I'd put initial spawning points for the navy stuff at the warpgates as you enter. Then you can make your navy and go.
As for the magrider and thresher, let them have an advantage. They have weaknesses to counter being able to hover. It's a valid tactic. Also, don't forget the lodestar. You'll be able to fly vehicles with it. That vehicle would have a real use on a continent like this one. Note on the hover vehicles. They can only traverse water for a short amount of time. Because the islands will have good seperation you'd still need a ship or lodestar to move those tanks from island to island. Main difference is that they could be dropped close to the beachhead and assist more directly in the assualt. I went ahead and drew a picture of how I see the islands as looking like. The tan is the beachhead and the high cliff openings. The gray is the cliffs. Crimson circles are bases soi. Brown lines are roads. Black squares are bunkers and they have connecting underground trenches. The trenches that are in the game now. The gray squares are towers. http://www.angelfire.com/rpg/eqpaladin/islandbases.JPG Last edited by chavr; 2003-05-29 at 08:25 AM. |
